Overtime: salaried employees push back

The times, they are a' changin'

When not working as a contractor or consultant, I've always worked in salaried positions in the technology sector.

The prevailing attitude during most of my career has been that salaried staff are not entitled to overtime pay, no matter how many hours one works at the request of company management (or due to lack of planning, project mismanagement, etc.)

My, how things have changed. There are older news stories about Electronic Arts instituting limited overtime policies. Knowing what I know about EA, this must have been an earth-shattering decision.

It seems there is a groundswell of support among the rank-and-file (now there's a term I haven't used in a long time when describing tech workers) salaried employees to limit the frequent abuse of the 'death march' mentality at some companies.

This has been a long time coming

Yes, this is certainly a sore subject. Far too many salaried employees have been pressured to put in crazy hours due to no fault of their own.

I think employers need to keep this in mind if they often expect 80- or 120-hour weeks from the engineering staff - could be trouble ahead!

My husband was recently

My husband was recently hired away from a 65 hour a week job with the promise of no more than 45h/p/wk and has yet to work less than 70(he's been there 6 months). Of course he is salaried. We he addresses this subject he is told that "he knew what he was getting into" In Michigan(maybe not just here) the economy has been so bad for so long, employers feel that they can do anything they want, cause what are ya gonna do, quit?
